Internet Use lowering Productivity?

MOST EMPLOYEES REPORT ACTUALLY WORKING
NEW YORK, October 10, 2005— FPC Workplace Web Poll Data indicates that 86% of employees polled feel their personal internet usage at work is at acceptable levels or non-existent, with only 5% stating that it may be decreasing their productivity, 4% feel that it makes them happier and therefore a better employee and 5% said it they would use the internet more at work but their companies block the sites.
FPC, a national executive search firm, anonymously polls job candidates visiting fpcnational.com to report on their job change activity and their expectations for the future. This latest data from the FPC Workplace Web Poll indicates that the nations’ employees the majority of employees think their internet usage at work is not interfering with their productivity.
Of 705 respondents completing the sentence “My personal internet usage at work is…?”
• 26% non-existent because I never use the internet for personal use at work
• 5% very little only because my company blocks most sites
• 60% within acceptable limits and does not decrease my productivity
• 4% more than it should be but makes me a better employee because I'm happier
• 5% honestly more than it should be and it probably decreases my productivity
Similarly, those searching for new jobs are showing restraint in their internet usage during work, with 84% indicating that they are conducting the internet portion of their job search in their personal time.
Of 704 respondents completing the sentence “I mostly work on my job search during…?”
• 16% work hours (9am-12pm, 1-6pm)
• 5% lunchtime (12-1pm)
• 15% early morning or in the evenings at work (7-9am, 6-9pm)
• 53% in the evenings at home
• 11% on the weekends
“The internet and email are no longer novelties that gobble up work hours since many people have access to them at home. The companies’ fears that employees were spending inordinate amounts of time on the internet seems to have lessened and in many cases, an understanding has developed between companies and employees that some personal internet and email usage is expected, but it’s a workplace and productivity is the priority.” said FPC President Ron Herzog.
