SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The position reports to the Corporate Purchasing Manager and is responsible for establishing and maintaining a capable supply base for assigned commodities. Responsible for quoting, sourcing, purchase order issuance and administration, and ongoing monitoring and development of suppliers. Must control costs of purchased materials through use of: cost targets, negotiations, market tests, make/buy proposals, design and/or process changes, and material substitutions.
PRIMARY DUTIES
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
1. The individual must have good inter-personal skills because this position will interact with all levels of management both inside the company and outside in supplier company organizations. Working closely with Product and Manufacturing Engineering, Sales, Finance, Production Planning, Quality Assurance and cost improvement committees is also required.
2. Provide the company with a well-rounded industry knowledge in the commodity groupings assigned to his/her buying assignment. Travel will be required (approximately 20 percent) to various supplier locations. These trips are necessary both to become familiar with different manufacturing processes and to meet and develop a rapport within supplier organizations.
3. Must be able to adapt to various commodity assignments and fill in on other buying assignments and special projects as needed.
4. Must have a sound business understanding, good organizational and leadership skills, the ability to read blueprints, good mathematical aptitude, be able to use software such as the Microsoft Office Suite, and have knowledge of quality assurance philosophies, practices, and techniques.
5. Must be a self-starter able to work without close supervision, understanding what needs to be done, and taking the required actions.
6. Professionally place purchase orders to meet program and production schedules, while maintaining good supplier relationships.
7. Control the cost of purchased materials within budget and generate cost reduction action plans.
8. Attain a level of product/commodity knowledge and to attain a level of awareness of supplier operations as they pertain to the company.
9. Professionally resolve problems (both internal and external) in a fair and ethical manner.
10. Participate in Program management review (new product launch).
11. Represent Purchasing on various cross-functional teams.
12. Develop and implement cost reduction program through vendor, material, contract reviews.
13. Support plant personnel as needed in material outage situations.
14. Shall adhere to all safety, health and environmental procedures, policies and practices such as; utilizing personal protective equipment and proper attire in keeping with safety standards.
15. Comply with all ISO/TS 16949 procedures and work instructions related to your job description.

17. Perform all other functions as required; included are any work assignments relating to the efficient flow of work within the company.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:
· Strong negotiation skills
· Strong analytical skills
· Ability to read, write and interpret contracts
· Knowledge of automotive purchasing processes (PPAP, etc.)
· Maintain a team-oriented working environment that allows for individual differences and provides for individual growth
· Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, policies and procedure manuals and operating instructions
· Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
· Knowledge of material, component and service suppliers to the automotive industry
· Understanding of manufacturing processes and bills of material
· Experience with computerized purchasing and scheduling systems (MAPICS a plus)
· Basic computer skills, including PC knowledge, Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn new software
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Good personal/employee relations skills
PREFERRED EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Note: Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required for all new hires in all positions.
