COMPANIES SHOULD SPEND MORE TIME DEVELOPING THEIR EMPLOYEES’ JOB RESPONSIBILITIES THAN LOYALTY PROGRAMS ACCORDING TO WEB POLL
FPC Workplace Web Poll Data Indicates that 74% of employees polled would stay in a position because of interesting job responsibilities or long-term potential while only 19% would stay because of loyalty to a manager or company.
NEW YORK, September 5, 2005—Recruiting professionals at FPC, a national executive search firm with more than 70 offices polls job candidates visiting the site to report on their job change activity and their expectations for the future.
This latest data from the FPC Workplace Web Poll indicates that the nations’ employees are not retained by large paychecks or company reputation, but by the job itself.
Of 910 respondents to the question “What is your primary reason for staying in a position?”
• 41% interesting job responsibilities
• 33% long-term potential
• 15% loyalty to the company
• 7% compensation
• 4% loyalty to a manager
Some employees would have liked their companies to take some action to keep them, while others felt it was just time to move on.
Of 910 respondents to the question “What could your company have done to keep you?”
• 44% nothing, it was just time to leave
• 28% new role within the company
• 10% new manager
• 10% increased compensation
• 8% promotion
“Employees have started to change jobs in large numbers after staying in their positions through the poor economical situation. Companies must take steps to retain those employees that play roles of particular importance to them before they decide to leave. Taking steps to ensure interesting job responsibilities and a clear growth pattern should be an ongoing retention process because once people feel they’ve exhausted the growth opportunity at a company, they will likely move on. ” said FPC President Ron Herzog.
