In my younger years when I regularly went overseas for work, I always thought about the tall pine trees that are prevalent on my parents’ property in central Georgia. Pine trees, for whatever reason were always a firm reminder of home for me, especially when the environments I was in were often devoid of real vegetation. Regardless of the amount of time spent away from home, how much I changed during that time, one thing remained unchanged; the pine trees. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Business has taught me similar lessons. From department to department, company to company, there are certain things that do not change with the passage of time. Key performance indicators, budget, and a whole host of other reviews are a consistent theme although each variation may have its own personality in the formatting, color coding, or prescribed place on a meeting agenda.
More directly, the people conducting the actual work, do change over time. We grow personally and professionally, our families expand, and we age. One thing that does not change is the importance of relationships. These relationships bring influence, inspire collaboration, and promote teamwork. They can help make you competitive for the next promotion or prevent you from continued professional growth within an organization.
As we look at the advent of more technology that improves efficiency in business, it is apparent that as the industry continues to evolve, but people are still the key ingredient. Conversations must happen and relationships must be established for business success. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
